Hadaka Hoopla

As readers of this blog know I do very little "wacky Japan" stuff, unless perhaps it relates to a film but I just couldn't resist posting the above image -- officially my favourite video grab of the year.

It comes courtesy of this story on Japan Probe about SMAP member Kusanagi Tsuyoshi's run in with the law this morning. First to break the news in English was Ryuganji's new Twitter feed (follow the feed on his blog until the kinks are worked out).

In the US when celebrities like Matthew McConaughey get involved in similar victimless antics it's endearing -- here it becomes the media equivalent of DEFCON 2. Kusanagi's retort to cops certainly endeared me to him -- working for J.J. would drive anybody stark raving nude, surely. Also goes to show that not only baka gaijin have cornered the market on these stunts.

Never said it before but thanks to Japan Probe for often linking to my relevant film news posts over the past couple of years.

It is I who should thank you, for always posting enjoyable material that is truly link-worthy!

Cheers for that.

How did he even get to the park in the middle of the night? Was he dropped off? Was it his plan to go there covertly and then strip, or was it decided spur of the moment? Sadly, we'll never know since he'll be suspended by JJ for the forseeable future from making any TV appearances.

More to the point, what will now happen to Bistro SMAP??

A lot of people have taken this opportunity to bash SMAP -- I've always found them pretty likable. Imagine how surreal their world is... I've heard second hand from someone who regularly works with Kusanagi that he's a good guy.

JJ is literally a stone's throw from where it went down. I'm sure they have lodging (ahem) and drivers available at all hours.

Update: Kusanagi ordered a taxi from the bar but then refused to get in and walked (stumbled?) over to the park.

I'm pretty sure he'll be back in action after some jishuku.

Thanks for the updates! It's too bad that people are bashing SMAP (though the posters are, frankly, hilarious). It'd be nice to see a few geinin stick up for Tsuyoshi here, something nobody ever does in this kind of situation. Who was he really hurting after all?

You mean the spoof of the chi-deji poster? That was indeed hilarious, but that kind of "bashing" is okay because it makes a statement on how knee-jerk everything is here. If this happened in the 60s or 70s I'm certain there would've been outspoken directors or actors who would've said "So he was naked. Get the f*** outta here with all this demonization."
