Here's the second, and final, roundup of brief highlights from the Toronto International Film Festival:
- The "Asian Night" reception at the Japan Foundation. Kurosawa Kiyoshi's short visit caused a big buzz.
- Seeing Martyrs, which surely represents the frontière of horror cinema in the world today. The post-film Q&A was interesting, but I thought there'd be more detractors.
- Seeing both parts of Che back to back.
- Midnight Madness reception at The Social. Had a good chat with some of the filmmakers in the programme, journalists covering it, and even some guys from the Aussie film fanzine scene back in the late 80s/early 90s, when I published "Sub-Terrenea" (sic), who now work in the industry.
- The violent rush of Public Enemy Number One (L'Instinct de Mort).
- Chocolate on the last night of Midnight Madness. Great fun, which included a video message to Toronto (and Colin) from female martial arts dynamo "Jeeja".
Thanks to my friends and family that made it an enjoyable stay. Toronto -- no matter how hard you try, as a city you'll never come close to being world class, but your festival achieved that status a long time ago...

Kiyoshi Kurosawa reception at the Japan Foundation! Damn! I usually get invited to functions there! Grrr!!!
Sorry we were ships passing in the night during TIFF, Jason. My girlfriend said she saw you a few times, so maybe a beer next time you're in town. Cheers!
He was at the MM party for a little while, too. He thought the Toronto audiences for Tokyo Sonata were very mature and asked good questions. Glad to hear his film got picked up by Maximum here. A US deal should be closed imminently.
Your girlfriend is very genki. Her interview is sure to be part of the extras on the R2 DVD of DMC.
