Sukiyaki Guns for the Golden Lion
A set of photos is up on Getty Images from Sukiyaki Western Django's competition bow in Venice.
Probably a dumb question, but does anybody know if the film is subtitled in English for foreign markets (it's obviously subtitled in Japanese here)? I had trouble catching about a third of the lines in the new long promo (nice Midnight Madness YouTube channel created by my friend Colin Geddess, who programmed Sukiyaki's NA premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival).

Then again, it could very well be my hearing/tinny speakers on my laptop. I'll try it with headphones.

glad to see miike isn't wearing one of those hats created as merchandise for the film - no flashing LED star on the front of that hat, and no cheap gags about the film being this years brokeback love story... just girls, guns, coffins...
Word is no on the english subs. Which leaves me simultaneously greatly anticipating and greatly dreading the thing ...

The Japanese press reported a standing ovation at the screening and Italian Spaghetti Western nuts yelling "Bravo!" -- so it's looking good. In any case the trailer footage is amazing.
Logboy -- thanks for the link. The shot of Tarantino and Momoi...I don't know what's stranger, the sun-on-a-string or Momoi's pigtails.
Some scoffed at the idea, but what about a spaghetti w. style dub job? You could get all the old 60s and 70s dubbers back together for a last hurrah.
i've got this fealing, and i've long had it, that there will be a japanese dub for the DVD release. it would be nice. or even italian, then japanese subs.
btw, got my review disc from ryo nakajima today.
I thought they'd hedge their bets and shoot a take in each language. I suspect there will be a fukikaeban (dubbed version) at the video shops -- these are produced for TV/cable airings of foreign films and there are usually a couple copies next to the regular subtitled rentals, but there hasn't been an example like this!
That's great you got your copy. Somehow I think your shambling style (that's not an insult) will match its chaotic energy.
my shambling style actually comes from :
1. relative lack of knowledge (which is growing, can't help but do that), and an interest in seeing odd or interesting things.
2. a rapidly fluctuation ability to concentrate, and
a massive issue with flowing short-term memory. this results from life-long health issues i'll always be left managing.
there you go, secret techniques revealed.
but hey, at least i'm trying, at least i've got an open mind, and i think it does benefit some folk somewhere...

No kidding! I just watched it. Somehow I'm totally uninterested...
I would love to think Miike is deliberately trying to use 'bad' English in order to play with the conventions of language in [foreign] cinema, but I really doubt there's that much thought going into it. I'm reminded of the (really crappy) episode Miike made for Masters of Horror.
Somehow I'm not surprised Miike is becoming yet another spokesman for "Japanese cinema" in the west.
