This is what I'm giving away:
1st Prize 'A'
Glory To The Filmmaker! bookmarks, stored in a little fold-out promo card.
1st Prize 'B'

Silver USB flash memory with "Vexille" title printed on it. Contains Vexille EPK files (press notes, high-res stills, trailer etc.) or you can format it and use it as a 64MB drive (I know that's miniscule. It was a freebie.) Cap is half removed to show connector. Comes with neck strap.
2nd Prize

Silver/black USB flash memory with "Toronto International Film Festival Group" printed on it. Contains Bell Lightbox promo video, or you can format it and use it as a 64MB drive (I know that's miniscule. It was a freebie.) Partially extended to show connector. Comes with neck strap.
To enter, please answer the following questions and send your answers using the contact form in the sidebar (don't post your answers in the comment section, obviously). As people are in different time zones and it's not as if thousands of visitors are flocking here every day, it won't be first-come-first-win -- I'll take a look at all the entries after a week and decide who deserves what as fairly as I can.
These are not "rules" (you can't enforce rules on the internet) but I'd prefer it if:
* you want the prize because you're interested in the film (or a friend is)
* you didn't sell it on eBay (you wouldn't get that much anyway, and if you do sell it please send back my postage )
* you're not a film industry insider -- you have access to freebies like this
The Questions:
1. What obscure actor has played both a male prostitute and a powerful Asian drug lord? Both films were made in the 80s and one of them was a high profile crime film directed by a famous filmmaker.
2. What Japan-related film was Martin Scorsese once set to direct (hint, it's not Silence)
3. Name three native Japanese cinematographers that have worked outside of Japan on non-Japanese films.
4. Which 1st prize you'd prefer (if you want the 2nd prize most, you won't get one of the first prizes as a consolation but the 2nd prize could be a consolation if you don't win the first).
5. Your comments about this blog (good or bad).
Make sure to enter your correct email address or I can't contact you to send you your swag.
I'll be very surprised if more than a couple people get the first question correct. The second and third are not that hard but probably not things you'd know off the top of your head (or maybe I shouldn't underestimate...)

you mean we can't win your duvet?
Damn Jason these are some serious questions! I'm wracking my brain and the googles...but nothing. Other than the D.P.'s I'm stumped. I guess I'll just take some shots in the dark and ope for the best. I think you're going to be hard pressed to find anyone who'll get them all.
Actually, looking at it again, the first question was too vague. I've added some info. The actor is basically a nobody, but I've wondered whatever happened to him. It's more about the two films, both of which I'm a fan of (especially the crime film).
One more hint for question two -- it's not a remake (that's why I said "Japan-related," not "related to Japanese film").
Would I be 'alone' in thinking I know the answer to question 1?
Just my luck, I have a notable gap in my 80's J-cinema knowledge. Everyone I'm thinking of is either not obscure enough or don't fit the bill at all. I hate being stumped! Looks like Don may be alone on this one. Actually I'm not solid on any of the 3 Q's so I'm shit out of luck!
No wonder the entries are barely a trickle .
They're not Japanese films, they're American, but the actor is Japanese. The crime film is directed by a famous Italian-American direcor and the other film is directed by a guy who shares a surname with my favourite singer.
My bad on the first question, but the other two questions stand!
Damn, and there I was thinking the answer to question 1 was John Lone for "Year of the Dragon" and "M. Butterfly".
Ah, half the cat is out of the bag now, but John Lone is not obscure!
Er, I thought you meant racially obscure... ;)
Now I get it. Damn, you're a hard taskmaster.
Next you're going to say that the answer to question 2 isn't "American Ninja". My answer to number 5: this blog would be immeasurably better if it was written by Aoi Sora. Just trying to help.
I think I've got all the answers.
But I've used IMDB druing the search process and the hint for the question 2 had already shown to me during the discussion at Neomarxism last month. So I shall not raise my hand for the prize.
Aceface.
don't be silly -- all the answers are on the 'net of course (and answer 2 is not only on neomarxisme).
if you want a prize, write in -- I'm trying to clean out my office!
1)The obscure Japanese actor's name is Yukio Yamamoto(who?).
He was street hustler in "Forty Deuce"(1982)and Asian drug lord in "Year of the Dragon"(1985)directed by famous Italian American director Michael Cimino(Is it true that he had sex changed?)
2)"Tokyo Underworld" by Robert Whiting or "Drunken Angel",remake of 1948 Kurosawa movie.
3)Kurita Toyomichi栗田豊通 of "Sukiyaki Western Django"2007 Miike Takashi had filmed "The Moderns"1988 by Alan Rudolph.
Nishimoto Tadashi西本正(akaHo-Lang Shang賀蘭山)
cinematographer of Nakagawa Nobuo films had filmed Bruce Lee film"Ways of Dragon"in 1972.
There is his interview book called "The road to HongKong香港への道”筑摩書房
Sakamoto Zenshou阪本善尚(IMDB got it wrong as Yoshinao.I've checked on the movies home page) had filmed "Battle of Wits"2006.(although this chinese epic is based on Japanese manga.)
4)B
5)More gossips.please!
Aceface
Imran Jaffrey wins the Glory bookmarks (please send me your address) and Aceface gets the Vexille flash memory (address, please). And Don if you want the 2nd prize (no great shakes, I know) for being the first to bring up Year Of The Dragon, you're welcome to that.
Yukio Yamamoto is indeed the name I was after. I was obsesssed with Year in the 80s, wore out several VHS tapes, always wondered what happend to Yamamoto, who played Ban Sung in the big Thailand scenes. Years later saw P. Morrissey's (then rare) Forty Deuce at Cinematheque and noticed Yamamoto in a small role selling "coke" and "cock" on a street corner. I assume he was NYC-based leading to his casting in Year. Cimino did not have a sex change but seriously glammed himself up surgically and sartorially. He is unrecognizable from his days as a macho Italian-American with mirror shades and a cowboy hat. Vanity Fair ran a big piece on him some years ago. I remember meeting James Toback, who at one time worked on a script about Frank Costello with Cimino that never got made and he repeated the same rumour. We had to set him straight.
Tokyo Underworld is indeed the project -- will probably never be made.
Aceface chose the exact three cinematographers I was thinking of. allcinema.net has 阪本善尚's yomikata as さかもとよしなお too.
Imran chose Kurita and two I wasn't familiar with (Takuro Ishizaka and Masato Chisuka), thanks for that.
