Glory To The Filmmaker!

Saw a press screening of Kitano Takeshi's Kantoku - Banzai! (『監督・ばんざい!』) earlier this afternoon. I've been sworn to secrecy by O.K. under threat of death by katana until the film's international premiere. But I can say this*:

Yanashito Kiichiro tore it a new arsehole on his blog

Sorry, hit post before I finished. That should be Yanashita Kiichiro. Sounds like it has the potential to be his worst received film yet.

Funny you should mention Yanashita and torn flesh on this blog.

Today was the last of the domestic press screenings, so I'm sure some Jap. language reviews are starting to surface. It'll be really interesting to see what the foreign notices are like.

Considering I really quite enjoyed Takeshis' I'm hoping Kantoku: Banzai is quality as well. If it's less self-referential it might actually work better for non-Kitano fans. At the very least Jason seemed to like it which makes me giddy. I can't see this soon enough.

On a Kitano side note, his portion of "To Each His Own Cinema" has been getting some good notices out of Cannes. Seeing as how he's been in a critical lull for the last few years it's nice to see some positive reactions to his work.

I really can't imagine how a non-Kitano fan would take the film. It'd be completely up in the air.

I'm hoping they release all the To Each His Own Shorts on a DVD or something. Kitano's sounds really funny -- the postive notices it got have been all over the news here.

I heard it was simulcast on TV in France when it screened. A DVD is apparently to follow on May 25th which is an amazing turnaround if true. I can't recall what article I read it in but I'm sure a little net hunting will provide some more info.

And here is said article, courtesy of Variety:

The DVD will be released in Gaul (?) on May 25th if this is correct. I'm suprised this wasn't capped and released online already. Hopefully the release will be decent so I can import.

Thanks.

There are some great stills on the Cinema Cafe site here. I didn't realise Michael Cimino was one of the 35! While there are other directors who have larger and more impressive bodies of work, Cimino remains my favourite filmmaker of all time -- always will be.

Did you guys see this month's STUDIO VOICE with Kitano on the cover? It's all about 'real cinema' for discerning folks. (*_* )~!!

I'm still interested in seeing KANTOKU BANZAI even though I have been less than thrilled with most of the recent Kitano productions. The caveat being the ZATOICHI remake which I liked a lot, for some reason. (CGI blood notwithstanding.)

your emo-cons are tad bunched and confusing. I haven't seen anything from Kitano since Zato. I refuse to purchase bootlegs because he is one director who will prolly get Region 1 DVD releases. althought I'm still waiting for Blood and Bones and such.

Noticed you have Morrissey in your links. My fiance' bought 10 tixs to his show in NJ (July). Not my cup of tea but some Smiths songs are quite catchy.

SPM,

I think it depends what browser you're using. Safari and Camino (both Mac) and Firefox should be fine. IE I dunno.

If you enter "Morrissey" in the search bar above you'll see that I'm a devout fan. I'm following the current US tour very closely. If you've never seen him live, do yourself a favour and go with your finaceé -- many a person has been converted to the church of Moz after only one sermon. Your initials are the same as his (Steven Patrick Morrissey), I noticed.

Nick,
If you liked Zatoichi, there's one sequence you'll love in KB.

Morrissey played a sold out show at a very nice old-style movie theater downtown last week (same place Michael Moore and Hara Kazuo came to a few days earlier). I thought about going to the show for a minute and looked to see if anyone was selling extra tickets online, but gave up after noticing the $60+ prices. I still ended up visiting the same theater that night to see Inland Empire in a different room. I peeked in on Moz on the way out and it looked like a nice and very well-lit show, but I didn't recognize the songs. Gotta say, the last few releases haven't impressed me, and I doubt Morrissey would be as genki on stage as he was 10-15 years ago when the tickets only cost $20-$30. . .
